Prodromou Monastery

Prodromou Monastery sits in a rock cavity above the Lousios River in the gorge between the villages of Stemnitsa and Dimitsana. The buildings are built into an overhanging cliff face and create a striking silhouette against the stone.

The monastery was founded in the 16th century and later served fighters as shelter during the Greek War of Independence. Its location in the gorge made it a safe place during a period of conflict.

The monastery displays frescoes created by Cretan artists in the 16th century that adorn its inner walls with religious scenes. These artworks continue to shape the appearance of the spaces and reflect the artistic tradition maintained in this region.

To reach the monastery, visitors must descend steep pathways that run along the gorge. Sturdy footwear and some time for walking are necessary to safely reach this remote location.

The monastery houses about 1000 old books and documents, including handwritten works from various periods. This collection shows the intellectual history maintained at this location over centuries.
