Lepida Gorge, Canyon in North Kynouria Municipality, Greece.
Lepida Gorge is a canyon in North Kynouria that cuts through Mount Parnon with steep limestone walls and two main waterfalls. The upper cascade drops about 70 meters while the lower one falls roughly 45 meters, with the gorge stretching about 500 meters overall.
The gorge was carved over millennia by water flowing from the Xirokabi plateau, which eroded the limestone bedrock and created the deep channels visible today. This geological process formed the foundation for the waterfalls that now define the landscape.
Local mountaineering groups regularly organize guided expeditions through the gorge, maintaining traditional routes and sharing knowledge of the terrain.
The first waterfall is reachable via a short dirt road and a brief walk from Agios Ioannis village, making it accessible for most visitors. The second waterfall requires a longer hike with steeper sections, so wear sturdy shoes and plan extra time for the descent.
The cascading water creates natural rock pools between the two waterfalls that fill with cool water and attract few crowds compared to the main falls. These hidden basins offer a quiet spot to rest and are often overlooked by visitors focused on reaching the larger cascades.
