Eua, Arcadia, Archaeological site in North Kynouria, Greece.
Eua is an archaeological site in North Kynouria where multiple layers of ancient building remain visible, including Roman architectural pieces situated near Loukou Monastery. The remains reveal structures and spaces that were built and rebuilt across different periods.
The area was inhabited since ancient times and became important in the 2nd century when the Roman speaker Herod Atticus built his large residence there. Later the site continued to change as religious life took hold with the establishment of a nearby monastery.
The remains reflect a meeting point of two ancient powers, with both Spartan and Argive influences visible in what survives today. This tells the story of a region shaped by different rulers over time.
The site lies within walking distance of Loukou Monastery, making it easy to visit both historical places together during the same trip. Plan enough time to explore both locations at a comfortable pace.
Excavations uncovered evidence of a sanctuary dedicated to Polemokrates that existed long before the modern monastery was built. This surprising discovery shows how ancient religious sites often took root in places already considered sacred.
