Koutouki Cave is a show cave near Peania featuring a main chamber of roughly 60 by 60 meters naturally divided by limestone formations into separate sections. The cave interior opens into these distinct areas, each shaped by water and mineral deposits over time.
The cave was discovered by chance in 1926 when a goat fell through a small opening, prompting formal investigation two years later by a journalist. This early exploration marked the start of systematic study at the site.
The Hellenic Speleological Society conducted detailed mapping of the cave in 1954, marking a significant step in Greek geological research and documentation.
Visitors enter through an artificial tunnel and can join guided tours lasting about 20 minutes in Greek or English. Wear sturdy shoes as paths are uneven and can be slippery from moisture.
The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 17 degrees Celsius year-round, making it a pleasant refuge on hot days. This stable climate results from being sheltered deep beneath the mountain.
