Stairs of Agios Nikolaos, Patra, Historic stairs in central Patras, Greece
The Stairs of Agios Nikolaos is an outdoor stairway in Patras, Greece, that connects two levels of the city. It links the lower commercial areas to the higher residential parts of town, ending at the Church of Agios Nikolaos.
In the early 1930s, a winding dirt path was replaced by a built concrete stairway. This change created a more direct connection between the different levels of Patras.
The stairway takes its name from the church that closes the route at the top, giving the climb a clear direction. Along the way, the surrounding neighborhood shows the everyday life of the city, with small buildings and local street activity close by.
Comfortable shoes are a good idea for the climb, as the steps can be steep in places. There are several resting spots along the way where you can pause and take in the view before continuing.
From the upper steps, you can see across the water toward the coastline of Aetoloakarnania on the far side of the bay. This viewpoint is easy to miss and offers one of the widest views of the city without going anywhere else.
