Monastery of Saint Augustine and Seraphim of Sarof, Orthodox monastery in Dorida Municipality, Greece.
The Monastery of Saint Augustine and Seraphim of Sarov is an Orthodox monastery in Dorida Municipality, in the Phocis region of Greece, set at around 600 meters above sea level. It consists of a central church with a tall bell tower and several monastic buildings arranged across the hillside northeast of Nafpaktos.
The monastery was founded in 1991 by Archimandrite Nektarios Moulatsiotis, which makes it one of the newer Orthodox monasteries in Greece. It came into being during a period when several new monastic communities were being established across the country.
The monastery honors two saints from very different backgrounds: Augustine, a North African bishop from the 4th century, and Seraphim of Sarov, a Russian monk from the 18th century. This pairing shapes daily monastic life and is something visitors can observe in the church's icons and dedications.
The monastery is best reached by private car, as the roads leading up from the surrounding area are steep and winding. Anyone planning a visit or a spiritual stay should contact the community in advance.
The bell tower is modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and holds 62 bells in total. Such a large collection is very unusual for an Orthodox monastery.
