Achaia Clauss

Achaia Clauss is a stone-built winery in Mavromandila combining traditional production methods with modern facilities across a sprawling hillside property. The estate features underground cellars where wines age in oak, including spaces dedicated to fermenting and storing its signature Mavrodaphne and table wine varieties.

The winery was founded in 1861 when a German businessman acquired the land initially for fruit cultivation, but soon recognized its potential for wine production. It evolved into a major center for Greek wine, becoming known throughout the country and beyond.

The winery produces Mavrodaphne, a sweet red wine that has shaped Greek winemaking traditions for generations. Walking through the production areas, visitors notice how local varieties are transformed using methods passed down through family operations.

Wear comfortable shoes as the grounds are situated on a slope with steps leading down to underground storage areas where wines age in barrels. Guided tours provide direct access to production zones and cellars where you can see the aging process firsthand.

The cellars hold bottles of Mavrodaphne from the 1970s that have aged in oak barrels, developing a deep brown hue with notes of dried fruit and caramel. These vintage collections demonstrate how the wines grow more complex and refined over decades of storage.
