Phourni, Bronze Age cemetery in Archanes-Asterousia, Greece
The Phourni archaeological site spans 6600 square meters and contains 26 burial buildings with rectangular chambers and rounded structures called tholos tombs.
Between 2400 BCE and 1200 BCE, this cemetery remained active during major transformations from Minoan society through the period of Mycenaean control.
The excavation revealed 136 seal stones, the largest collection discovered at one location in northern Crete, indicating social status and identification methods.
The site sits on a hill northwest of Archanes village, offering clear views of Mount Juktas and the surrounding Cretan landscape.
Archaeological findings include evidence of horse dismemberment, bull skull placement, and wine production facilities within the funerary complex.
