Anopolis, Archaeological site in Sfakia Municipality, Greece.
Anopolis is an archaeological site situated on a highland plateau roughly 600 meters (2,000 feet) above sea level in Sfakia. The remains here include ancient walls, building foundations, and a large cistern located near a Byzantine church.
This ancient city minted its own coins and maintained self-rule until the 3rd century BC, when a neighboring power took control. The change marked the end of local independence and began a new chapter in the settlement's story.
Multiple Byzantine churches near this location show how the settlement remained important across different time periods. People continuously returned to live and worship in this highland community.
Visitors can reach the site through hiking paths that link it to nearby Loutro and surrounding areas. The cooler months are better for exploring, as the elevated location receives direct sun exposure.
A preserved city wall at the Riza location offers insight into ancient defensive structures. Box-shaped tombs and the foundation of an identified sanctuary add layers to what visitors can observe on the ground.
