Place Carnot, Square in the Presqu'île district, Lyon, France

Place Carnot is a rectangular square in Lyon's Perrache area, lined with 19th-century buildings and crisscrossed by walkways that lead from Rue Victor-Hugo toward the train station. Its open center is shaded by tall trees, with low stone edges framing the paths and the monument at the middle.

The square was created in the early 1800s and received several names as political regimes changed, including Place Louis XVIII and Place de la République. It took its current name in 1889 in honor of Lazare Carnot, a key figure of the revolutionary government.

The north side of the square keeps a small weekly market where stallholders set up fruit and vegetable stands under the trees, a routine that draws many residents from nearby streets. Around the perimeter, café terraces face the monument, and people often pause there before heading to the station.

The square can be entered from several surrounding streets, and its flat, open layout makes walking through it straightforward even with luggage or a stroller. The edges offer benches in the shade, while the southern end connects directly to the transport hub next to the station.

A stone lion carved at the base of the central statue is often missed by people crossing the square toward the station. Local accounts also recall that a horse market once operated on this ground, long before the current trees and paths were laid out.
