Church Saint-Jean-en-Grève, Medieval church ruins in 4th district, Paris, France
The church building stood between the Hotel de Ville and Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church, surrounded by narrow streets in central Paris.
Initially constructed as a baptismal chapel, the structure became a parish church in 1212 and underwent complete reconstruction in 1326.
The church maintained the oldest parish registers in Paris, dating from 1515, until their destruction during the Paris Commune of 1871.
Archaeological excavations revealed remains of the church structure approximately 1.5 meters below current ground level on Rue Lobau street.
The painter Hubert Robert documented the demolition of the church in 1800 through an oil painting now displayed at the Carnavalet Museum.
