Saint-Romain-de-Lerps, Commune in the canton of Saint-Péray, Ardèche, France
Saint-Romain-de-Lerps is a commune in the Ardèche department, perched on a hilltop above the Rhône valley, in the canton of Saint-Péray and the arrondissement of Tournon-sur-Rhône. The village is made up of old stone houses, narrow lanes, and vineyards that cover the surrounding slopes.
The village grew from an early farming settlement and developed over the centuries around wine-growing and agriculture. A tower from the 11th-century castle of Durtail still stands on the hill, the only visible remain of its medieval past.
The belvedere at Le Pic is the spot most visitors head to first, with a small chapel nearby and benches to sit and look out over the valley. On a clear day, the view takes in the Alps to the east and the Massif Central to the west.
The village is best explored on foot, as the lanes are narrow and parking is available near the entrance of the village. Spring and early summer are the most comfortable times to visit, when the hillside vineyards are at their greenest.
On certain winter days, a layer of fog fills the valley below while Le Pic stays above it, giving the feeling of standing on an island above the clouds. On those days, the nearby castle of Crussol appears to float on its rocky spur, cut off from the land beneath.
