Étang de la Bonde, Artificial pond in the Luberon Massif, Vaucluse, France.

This artificial pond covers approximately 250 acres (100 hectares) and serves as the largest body of water in the Luberon Massif, located between Cabrières-d'Aigues and La Motte-d'Aigues about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Aix-en-Provence.

The pond was originally built as part of the Canal de Provence irrigation system to supply water for agricultural purposes throughout the region and continues to support local farming while now serving recreational uses as well.

Local residents of the South Luberon consider this site a cherished gathering place for outdoor leisure and relaxation, with its warm summer waters and natural setting deeply woven into community life and regional identity.

The site offers supervised swimming during summer months, fishing with a required permit, walking paths around the perimeter suitable for all mobility levels, and nearby picnic areas, tennis courts, and restaurants serving regional products.

Fishing enthusiasts travel from across the region to attempt catching carp weighing up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms), with some anglers camping for several days to pursue these large fish in the pond's managed waters.

Things to do in Luberon: perched villages, ochre cliffs, and natural treasures of Provence

Between gentle mountains and stone villages, Luberon encompasses everything that Provence has to offer in its brightest form. Its roads wind through lavender fields, ochre cliffs, and blonde bastides clinging to hills. Here, each village tells a story from a different time, each alleyway preserves the shadow of a medieval past, and each landscape appears painted by hand. In Gordes or Roussillon, the houses play with the light; in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the Sorgue springs from an emerald-green abyss; and in the valleys, abbeys and castles watch over the plains.
