Planoise, Residential neighborhood in western Besançon, France
Planoise is a residential neighborhood in western Besançon with modern buildings and around 15,000 residents living in various housing complexes. The area spreads between the Planoise hill and the Hauts-de-Chazal plateau.
The name comes from Latin 'planesium' and is documented from 1435, but the area was developed as a modern residential district only in the 1960s. This urban expansion was part of Besançon's growth after World War II.
The neighborhood is home to people from more than 50 countries who shape daily life through local celebrations and community gatherings. You can find shops, restaurants, and meeting places that reflect this mix of backgrounds.
The neighborhood is connected to central Besançon through multiple bus routes of the Ginko network that serve different areas. You can reach the city center quickly and easily using public transport.
The neighborhood has a large network of schools, libraries, and cultural facilities on-site, making it a relatively self-contained district. Many visitors don't realize that this infrastructure was deliberately planned to create a complete community.
