Besançon School of Fine Arts, école des beaux-arts de Besançon
The Besançon School of Fine Arts is an art education institution located in the Bouloie district, designed by Josep Lluis Sert between 1970 and 1974. The 7000-square-meter building contains workshops for painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video and digital graphics, accommodating around 250 students annually.
Art education in Besançon originated in the 18th century with a royal academy in the city center and was expanded in 1807 through a free drawing school. The current building was constructed in the 1970s as a modernist structure that repositioned this long educational tradition within contemporary architecture.
The school serves as a gathering place where artists share their work through regular exhibitions and residencies in the galleries. This role has made it an important center for contemporary artistic expression in the region.
The building is located on Rue Denis Papin in the Bouloie district and is easy to find with its modern structures and open spaces. Visitors can attend exhibitions, events and occasional open days to see the workshops and meet with instructors.
The building was designed by Josep Lluis Sert, the same architect who worked on the MAEGHT Foundation, and reflects Le Corbusier's influence in its lines and open spaces. This architecture itself becomes a teaching tool that shapes students' creative experience daily.
