Fort of Justices, Military fortification in Montrapon district, Besançon, France
Fort of Justices is a military fortification in the Montrapon district positioned at 343 meters elevation and extending about 350 meters. It contains casemates, powder magazines, and defensive structures built in the 1870s.
It was built between 1872 and 1874 to protect the route to Vesoul and reinforce Besançon's northwestern defenses. Its construction came after a major conflict that prompted France to upgrade its border fortifications.
The fort reflects how France built its defenses in the 1800s using a specific military design system. This approach shaped how the region was protected and is still visible in its construction today.
Today it functions as offices for the National Gendarmerie of Franche-Comté and underwent significant rebuilding in the 1980s. The location on elevated terrain offers good views of the region and the surrounding landscape.
Although officially named Fort Pajol after a general, local people have long called it Fort of Justices. This alternative name stuck and is how most residents refer to the place today.
