Le Splendid, Theater group and café venue in Paris, France
Le Splendid is a theater company and performance space in Paris that began as a collective of actors and writers in the 1970s. The stage now sits on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin and continues to present comedies and dramatic productions.
The group was founded in 1974 by Christian Clavier, Michel Blanc, Gérard Jugnot, and Thierry Lhermitte, who met at Lycée Pasteur in Neuilly-sur-Seine. In 1981, the company moved to Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin and established itself there under the direction of Bruno Moynot.
The group created works that later became successful films and shaped French comedy in the late 1970s. Their working method relied on shared improvisation and an ensemble style that appealed to French audiences with direct humor.
The venue sits on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin in the 10th arrondissement, a neighborhood with many theaters and cafés. Performances take place in the evening, and it helps to check in advance which productions are running.
Several members of the company later won César Awards and pursued successful film careers, while occasionally reuniting for joint projects. The collective showed that ensemble work can also produce long-term solo artists.
