Clos de Vougeot, Renaissance château in Vougeot, France

Clos de Vougeot is a château that centers on medieval wine production, with vat rooms, traditional pressing equipment, and kitchen spaces built into its stone structure. These facilities reveal how wine was made and stored according to practices established centuries ago.

Cistercian monks from Cîteaux Abbey created this wine operation in the 12th century to supply their religious community. Renaissance additions in the 16th century reshaped the buildings and gave the place much of its current form.

The Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, a wine brotherhood, gathers here to conduct tasting ceremonies and celebrations tied to the wine calendar. You can sense their presence in the courtyards during special events throughout the year.

You can tour the property with a guide to explore the wine-making rooms and period equipment throughout the stone buildings. Plan ahead since tour times change with the seasons and special events held on the grounds.

The vineyard around the property is registered as a single grand cru classification rather than being divided into smaller parcels. This unified status is unusual for Burgundy, where most vineyard names apply to much smaller areas.
