Mirepoix, Medieval commune in Ariège, France
Mirepoix occupies a strategic position between Foix and Pamiers, featuring traditional architecture along the banks of the Hers-Vif river at 276 meters elevation.
Following a devastating flood in 1289, the entire town was rebuilt on an elevated natural terrace, resulting in the current layout of the settlement.
The city maintains a strong connection to performance arts through the MiMa Festival, which brings puppet theater productions to the community each year.
The municipality provides educational facilities including a college and a comprehensive high school, serving students from the surrounding 35 communes.
The central square contains medieval wooden galleries supported by carved beams and posts dating from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries.
