Chapelle et calvaire Notre-Dame de Tronoën, Religious complex with chapel and calvary in Saint-Jean-Trolimon, France.
Chapelle et calvaire Notre-Dame de Tronoën is a religious complex in Saint-Jean-Trolimon featuring a stone chapel with a central bell tower and a separate calvary grouping. The site includes a devotional fountain with a stone washhouse near the entrance, along with multiple granite-carved figures arranged across the landscape.
The site was established in the 15th century and contains one of Brittany's oldest large calvaries, constructed between 1450 and 1470. Archaeological remains suggest that religious activities took place at this location since Neolithic times.
The carved figures on the calvary depict biblical scenes that visitors walk through and encounter directly as they move around the site. This arrangement invites travelers to experience the Christian narrative through the landscape rather than simply viewing it.
The site is easily explored on foot, and spending time moving between the carved figures gives visitors the full experience. The devotional fountain and washhouse remain accessible, though they are no longer in active use.
Inside the chapel stands an exceptional granite altar crafted from a single block, a striking feat of stonework. It is accompanied by painted wooden statues from the 17th century, creating a notable collection of religious art.
