Chapelle et calvaire Notre-Dame de Tronoën, Religious complex with chapel and calvary in Saint-Jean-Trolimon, France.
Chapelle et calvaire Notre-Dame de Tronoën is a religious complex in Saint-Jean-Trolimon, Brittany, made up of a stone chapel with a bell tower and a separate granite calvary. Near the entrance, a devotional fountain and a stone washhouse complete the ensemble.
The calvary was built in the 15th century and is considered one of the oldest large calvaries in Brittany. Archaeological finds suggest the site was used for religious purposes since Neolithic times.
The figures on the calvary show scenes from the life of Jesus that visitors discover one by one as they walk around. This layout turns the path itself into part of a religious journey.
The site is easy to walk through, and taking the time to move slowly between the figures gives the best sense of the whole. The fountain and washhouse near the entrance can still be seen up close, even though they are no longer in use.
Inside the chapel stands a granite altar carved from a single block of stone, which is very rare given the size and weight of the material. Next to it stand painted wooden statues from the 17th century that have remained in this chapel for centuries.
