Pointe de la Grande Journée, Mountain summit in Savoie, France.
Pointe de la Grande Journée is a mountain summit in the Beaufortain Massif rising to about 2,460 meters (8,070 feet). The peak looks out across multiple Alpine valleys and the surrounding mountain ranges that define the landscape.
Medieval shepherds carved out paths around the mountain to move Beaufort cheese from high pastures down to valley markets. These routes became the foundation for the hiking trails that exist in the area today.
The summit sits within territory shaped by Alpine dairy farming, where herders move livestock across different elevations with the seasons. You can observe how this practice has molded the landscape and continues to define the daily life of the region.
Multiple hiking paths lead to the summit, with the main route starting from La Bâthie covering roughly 8.6 kilometers with around 700 meters (2,300 feet) of elevation gain. The best season for hiking is late spring through early autumn, when snow has melted and trails are in good condition.
The mountain holds a network of natural springs that flow steadily throughout the year, providing reliable water for pastoral activities. These water sources are essential for shepherds working at higher elevations and allow for extended stays on the alpine pastures.
