Malbuisson, Commune in Doubs, France
Malbuisson is a small commune in the Doubs department of France, situated on the shore of Lac Saint-Point, one of the largest natural lakes in the country. The village is made up of old stone houses and quiet streets that open directly onto the lakefront.
The village was once known as "Chez les Mahoures" and formed part of a larger territory called Saint-Point. Over the centuries, monks from nearby religious communities helped clear the surrounding land and establish the first farms and homes in the area.
Malbuisson has a small workshop that has been casting bronze bells since the 1800s, and it is one of the last of its kind still operating in France. Visitors can watch how the bells are shaped and learn about the traditions tied to this craft.
The village is easy to explore on foot, with streets leading down to the lake and a walking path that follows the entire shoreline. Arriving early in summer is a good idea, as the area around the water tends to get busy during the warmer months.
Once a year, the road around the lake is closed to cars and people walk, cycle, or rollerskate along a route of about 12 miles (around 20 kilometers). On that day, the lakeside turns into a long open-air space filled with music and food stands.
