Houlgate

Houlgate is a coastal settlement in Calvados along the English Channel, with residential areas and administrative facilities at an elevation of about 10 meters. The town extends along the shoreline and provides schools, healthcare services, and local infrastructure for its approximately 1,600 residents.

The village grew from the small hamlet of Beuzeval, which had scarcely 200 residents in the early 1800s. The railway connection in 1882 transformed this remote settlement into a sought-after coastal destination.

The place takes its name from the former settlement of Beuzeval, which evolved over time. Today, life here is shaped by visitors and vacation homes that define the character of this coastal spot.

The settlement is easy to reach and offers basic facilities including an elementary school and healthcare services for visitors and residents. The flat terrain and compact layout make it simple to get around on foot and explore the main areas.

About four-fifths of the buildings here are vacation homes rather than permanent residences, making this place especially popular during summer months. This high proportion of second homes shapes the daily rhythm and character of the town in a distinctive way.
