Maison Bleue, Historical house with art garden in Dives-sur-Mer, France
Maison Bleue is a residential house in Dives-sur-Mer containing an extraordinary garden filled with artistic monuments decorated with mosaics from salvaged ceramics, glass, and other materials. The entire ensemble merges residential living with elaborate artistic decoration throughout the grounds.
A Portuguese mason named Euclides da Costa Ferreira created this artistic ensemble between 1957 and 1984 while recovering from tuberculosis at his residence. Over these decades he gradually transformed his living grounds into an art installation.
The garden displays religious elements such as a chapel with a nave and altar, reflecting da Costa's personal interpretation of sacred architecture. This spiritual approach transforms salvaged materials into expressions of faith visible in every corner of the site.
Access is available through guided tours and free visits during specific days, with opening periods mainly in the warmer months. Visitors should wear proper footwear as the garden features unpaved paths and uneven surfaces throughout.
Each monument in the garden displays intricate patterns featuring birds, snakes, deer, and geometric designs crafted from salvaged debris. These artistic details accumulated over many years create an unexpected visual journey across the entire property.
