Goûter Refuge, Mountain hut in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, France
Goûter Refuge is a mountain shelter located on the ridge between Goûter and Mont Blanc at very high altitude. It houses around 120 people per night and serves as the final staffed stop for anyone attempting to reach the summit.
The shelter was founded in 1854 when a physician named Charles Loiseau built a basic stone structure. The building has been rebuilt several times since then, with the current version completed in 2013.
The shelter serves as a gathering place where climbers from around the world meet before their summit attempt. You find people of all ages and backgrounds here sharing experiences and encouraging one another.
You need to book a spot well in advance, especially during the busy season from May to October. The shelter is accessible only on foot, and you should prepare for extreme weather and very cold temperatures.
The building has an egg-shaped form designed to withstand the extreme conditions at this altitude. This unusual architecture combines durability with environmentally responsible construction principles.
