Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge, Transporter bridge in Rochefort, France
The Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge is a steel structure that spans the Charente River using a suspended platform lifted by cables that carries pedestrians and vehicles between both shores. The mechanism relies on a pulley system powered by motors to raise and lower the gondola smoothly.
This structure was built in the late 1800s as a solution to allow river traffic to pass while connecting the two shores without blocking ships with a traditional bridge. The original design has been adapted with newer technology over time to keep it functioning safely.
The bridge connects two communities and represents a symbol of unity between Rochefort and Échillais that residents have relied on for generations. Visitors can observe how locals use this crossing as part of their everyday lives while experiencing the sense of continuity it brings.
The crossing takes only a few minutes and operates daily, though weather and maintenance can occasionally affect service. It is best to arrive early in the day, especially during peak season, when more visitors use this route.
While modern bridge designs spread across the world, this model remains one of the few of its kind still in regular use. Its original steel cables and gears remain visible after more than a century, telling the story of engineering that has endured the test of time.
