The Flight into Egypt, Religious oil painting at Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France

The Flight into Egypt depicts the Holy Family's journey through a Roman landscape, with an angel guiding them across a diagonal composition measuring 97 by 133 centimeters.

Nicolas Poussin completed this masterwork in 1657 or 1658, during his established period in Rome where classical art and architecture influenced his artistic development.

The painting illustrates a biblical narrative from the Gospel of Saint Matthew, showing Joseph, Mary, and infant Jesus escaping King Herod's persecution.

Following extensive fundraising efforts in 2007, the Louvre and Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon jointly purchased the painting for 17 million euros.

The composition separates sacred and earthly spaces through diagonal arrangement, with each character's expression contributing to the narrative of spiritual journey.
