La Plagne, Ski resort in Tarentaise Valley, France
La Plagne is a ski resort in the Tarentaise Valley of the French Alps that spreads across ten connected villages between 1,250 and 3,250 meters elevation. The area covers 137 runs with different difficulty levels distributed across the valleys and ridges.
During the 1960s, the first mountain villages at higher elevations began to be built after the area had previously been used for copper mining. The different villages grew gradually over two decades with different building styles.
The name comes from the Latin word for flat area and describes the gentle slopes around some of the higher villages. Visitors see both wooden chalets with stone walls and more modern buildings in concrete and glass that date from the 1960s and 1970s.
The area is accessible via mountain roads that require snow chains in winter or by bus from the surrounding valleys. Most runs are connected by 76 lifts including cable cars and chairlifts that make it possible to move between villages.
A prominent building in Plagne Aime 2000 resembles the shape of an ocean liner and sits at 2,000 meters elevation among the peaks. The unusual silhouette stands out clearly from the alpine surroundings and is visible from the valley.
