Caves Byrrh of Thuir, Wine cellar in Thuir, France

Caves Byrrh is a historic production facility in Thuir that specializes in making wine and aperitifs through traditional methods. The site contains multiple storage areas with large wooden vats where the drinks age and develop their flavor.

The Violet brothers, formerly shepherds in the Vallespir region, founded Caves Byrrh in 1866 and created a distinctive wine-based aperitif using new production techniques. This enterprise grew from a local venture into an established business that operated for generations.

The cellars display original advertising posters from the early 1900s that show how French companies marketed wine and aperitifs at that time. Walking through, you notice how different the visual style was compared to modern advertising.

The site is open to visitors through guided tours offered in multiple languages that allow you to see the production areas and storage rooms. It's best to visit during standard opening hours when tours run regularly and you can explore at a comfortable pace.

The complex houses one of the largest wooden vats ever built, constructed with exceptional craftsmanship using traditional methods. This remarkable vessel demonstrates the skill of coopers who could engineer such massive storage containers.
