Château de Salignac, Medieval fortress in Salignac-Eyvigues, France.

Château de Salignac is a stone fortress built on elevated terrain between Brive la Gaillarde and Sarlat la Canéda, positioned to guard the northern border of Périgord Noir. The structure features sturdy masonry and the commanding position typical of defensive fortifications from medieval times.

The fortress was built in 1040 and became a major military stronghold during the Hundred Years War. It retained defensive importance through the 15th century before losing its strategic role.

The castle serves as a venue for medieval performances that bring historical life to visitors through demonstrations and interactive activities. These events show how people in past centuries worked, celebrated, and spent their daily time.

Visiting requires planning since opening hours vary by season and checking ahead is recommended. Access is limited for wheelchairs and strollers due to the uneven terrain and steep pathways.

Since 2006, a father-son team has undertaken a complete restoration of this fortress older than 1000 years, personally managing everything from wall repairs to foundation work. This revival of a medieval structure through private effort is a remarkable undertaking.
