Agde Round Lock, Canal lock in Agde, France.
The round-shaped lock features three water gates connecting the Canal du Midi with the Hérault River and local waterways at different levels.
Built in 1676 using volcanic stone, the lock measured 29 meters in diameter and underwent modifications in 1978 to accommodate larger Freycinet gauge vessels.
The lock represents a major engineering achievement of the Canal du Midi system, demonstrating French maritime innovation in the 17th century.
Boats entering the lock can navigate between the Canal du Midi, the Mediterranean Sea through the Hérault River, and the Étang de Thau lagoon.
The circular design allows vessels to rotate inside the chamber, making it one of only two round locks constructed in France.
