Réserve naturelle nationale du Bagnas

The Réserve naturelle nationale du Bagnas is a protected natural area featuring lakes, lagoons, and salt marshes in a Mediterranean coastal setting between Agde and Marseillan. The site contains multiple habitats where water, reed beds, and open meadows form a complex ecosystem.

The site was used for salt production for centuries before becoming a nature reserve in 1983. This transformation resulted from local efforts to prevent urban development projects in the area.

The name comes from the old salt ponds that once dominated the landscape here. Visitors can observe birds feeding and nesting in the reed beds and around the water edges today.

Visits are only possible with a guided tour, which can be arranged through the local visitor center. It is helpful to bring comfortable shoes and binoculars for better bird watching.

The site is managed by a local association that regularly conducts scientific observations of bird migration patterns. These records help researchers understand changes in migration routes over time.
