Fort du Mûrier, Military fort in Gières, France
Fort du Mûrier is a military fortification located at 420 meters altitude on the eastern edge of Gières with a distinctive V-shaped design and crenellated defensive walls. The structure was built with reinforced positions designed to work in coordination with other regional forts.
The fortification was constructed between 1875 and 1878 following the Séré de Rivières system, a 19th-century French defensive strategy. During World War I it served as a prisoner camp before being repurposed for other uses in subsequent decades.
Artists have transformed this military structure into a creative space where exhibitions and performances take place regularly. The transformation shows how a former defensive installation now serves the local community as a cultural venue.
The site is open year-round and can be reached by car or on foot, though weather conditions should be considered when planning a visit. It is helpful to check local conditions beforehand and wear appropriate clothing for variable mountain weather.
The fort was equipped with quarters for around 540 soldiers and more than 30 artillery pieces, forming a paired defense system with nearby Fort du Bourcet. This fortification pair was designed to maintain control over the Grésivaudan valley and provide mutual fire support.
