Pont du Diable, Medieval stone bridge in Céret, France

Pont du Diable is a medieval stone bridge in Céret that crosses the river with a single bold arch. The structure spans about 45 meters long and rises about 22 meters high, standing as an impressive feat of medieval engineering.

The bridge was built in 1341 and represented the advanced building techniques available in the medieval period. It survived centuries of use, wars, and natural forces, and today stands as a protected historical monument.

The bridge takes its name from local folklore, which attributed its construction to supernatural forces rather than human hands. Today, the sturdy stone arch seems to embody the legendary tales that have always surrounded it.

The bridge is accessible to pedestrians and light vehicles, with a width of about 4 meters. The best viewpoint for photos is from below, where you can see the impressive arch against the sky.

Building this bridge with its high arch was incredibly risky for its time and required completely new construction methods. Builders had to develop techniques that had never been used before to achieve such a daring design.
