Ermitage de Saint-Ferréol, Pre-Romanesque church in Céret, France
The Ermitage de Saint-Ferréol is a pre-Romanesque church complex situated on a rocky plateau north of Céret, surrounded by holm oak trees. The site comprises several stone buildings arranged together to form a modest religious sanctuary.
Benedictine monks from Arles-sur-Tech abbey built this religious retreat at the end of the 13th century. The structures underwent major renovation between 1772 and 1775.
The site is named after Saint Ferréol, an early Christian martyr from the region whose memory still shapes how locals view this place. The surrounding landscape and simple structures reflect the spiritual values that drew people here for centuries.
The hermitage is located approximately 4 kilometers from Céret and can be reached via a path suitable for both vehicles and walkers. Parking facilities are available at the site to make your visit straightforward.
A holy water font inside the chapel bears an inscription referencing Laurent Cros, a hermit who later sought refuge at this site. His story connects this remote sanctuary to wider historical events beyond the Pyrenees.
