Maubert - Mutualité, Metro station in the 5th arrondissement, Paris, France
Maubert - Mutualité is an underground metro station on line 10, located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris near the Place Maubert and the Maison de la Mutualité. The station has two platforms lined with white tiles and curved ceilings, with rows of orange seats and a lighting system that runs along the length of the tunnels.
The station opened in 1930 as part of the expansion of line 10 and was named after the already well-known neighborhood around the Place Maubert. In 2003, the lighting was renewed and new signs were added, but the overall look of the station has stayed close to its original form.
The station takes its name from the Place Maubert, which itself is named after a medieval scholar known as Albert the Great. A small open-air market still meets on the nearby square on certain mornings, drawing local residents and students from the surrounding university buildings.
The station has 3 exits opening onto different streets in the 5th arrondissement, making it straightforward to orient yourself once you reach street level. Several nearby bus lines connect from just above ground, which helps when heading to spots that are a bit farther on foot.
A scene from the 1959 film 'Archimède le clochard' was shot inside this station, turning it briefly into a film set. The station is also mentioned by name in a song by Jean Ferrat, giving it a small place in the history of French popular music.
