Jacques Bonsergent, Metro station in the 10th arrondissement, Paris
Jacques Bonsergent is a metro station on line 5 in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, near the Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood. The station sits underground and links this residential and commercial district to the rest of the Paris metro network.
The station opened in 1942 and was named after Jacques Bonsergent, the first civilian executed by German occupying forces in Paris. He was shot in December 1940 after allegedly striking a German soldier during an altercation.
The station is within walking distance of the Canal Saint-Martin, one of the most frequented areas in this part of Paris. The surrounding neighborhood is easy to navigate on foot, with many small shops and cafes nearby.
When German occupiers posted notices of Bonsergent's execution across the city in 1940, Parisians reportedly tore them down in quiet acts of defiance. This reaction is considered one of the earliest signs of popular resistance in occupied Paris.
