L'Estaque, Railway station in L'Estaque, Marseille, France.
L'Estaque is a railway station in Marseille's 16th arrondissement with a main building constructed between 1848 and 1851. Art Deco metal structures were added to the station during the late 1920s to expand its facilities.
The station was built initially to handle freight transport but later became a passenger facility. It eventually received official protection as a French historic monument.
The neighborhood around the station attracted painters in the 1800s who were drawn to its distinctive light and coastal position. This artistic heritage still shapes how the place looks and how residents connect with the area.
The station sits on top of a hill and features four tracks with one central platform and two side platforms. Its elevated position creates a natural division between the station area at the top and the beach section lower in the village.
The station's hilltop location led to a split identity for the village with L'Estaque-Gare at the top and L'Estaque-Plage at the bottom. This geographical division shapes how residents and visitors experience the two distinct parts of the settlement.
