Château des Tourelles is a medieval castle in Vernon featuring a square central tower about 20 meters high with four round turrets at each corner. The structure stands on foundations that contain remnants of a former mill and ancient bridge piers.
King Philip II Augustus built the castle in 1196 after seizing Vernon from English control to defend the strategic bridge crossing the Seine. The building has retained its original medieval design through the centuries.
The French Ministry of Culture designated Château des Tourelles as a monument historique classé in 1945, recognizing its architectural preservation.
The site is located on Rue Ogereau in Vernon and visitors can view the exterior and surrounding gardens. Note that the interior of the castle remains closed to the public.
The structure maintains its original medieval design and stands on the foundation of a former wheat mill built upon ancient bridge piers.
