Prieuré de Thierenbach, Religious priory in Jungholtz, France
The Prieuré de Thierenbach is a priory centered on a basilica built between 1719 and 1723 by architect Peter Thumb in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace. The building displays the Baroque style of its era and forms the core of what was once an important religious community.
The priory was founded around 1130 and housed Cluniac monks until 1790. The site suffered multiple destructions during the Thirty Years War and required rebuilding afterward.
The basilica holds a collection of votive offerings left by believers grateful to the Virgin Mary for protection or healing. These personal gifts tell stories of people who came here seeking help.
The site underwent major renovation in 2008, with special attention given to the courtyard to preserve the historical structure. Visitors should allow time to explore both the interior spaces and the surrounding buildings.
The property was originally divided into two separate priory sites, one for monks and one for nuns, both supported by agricultural resources from the town of Soultz. This division was uncommon and reflected the importance placed on these communities.
