Ubaye Valley, Alpine valley in Alpes de Haute-Provence, France
Ubaye Valley is a mountain valley in the Alpes de Haute-Provence that stretches from the Italian border to Serre-Ponçon Lake. Its landscape is shaped by high peaks rising over 3,400 meters and contains several villages and towns.
The valley was originally inhabited by the Celtic Esubii tribe before coming under Roman rule. Barcelonnette was founded in 1231 and became the region's main center.
Barcelonnette shows Mexican influences through villas built by emigrants who prospered in Mexico and returned home. These buildings shape the town's appearance and reflect a special connection between this French region and Mexico.
The valley can be reached via several mountain passes that are mostly passable for vehicles during summer months. Good preparation for changing mountain weather conditions is important, especially when visiting higher areas.
Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye is the only French commune that contains more than 30 mountain summits exceeding 3,000 meters. This rare concentration of high peaks makes this location a striking geographical phenomenon in France.
