Château des Adhémar, Medieval castle in Montélimar, France.

Château des Adhémar is a medieval castle in Montélimar featuring a residential section, Romanesque chapel, square tower, and fortified walls with a defensive walkway. The walkway provides views across the surrounding region and demonstrates the building's defensive design from the Middle Ages.

The castle was founded in the 11th century by the Count of Toulouse and passed to the Adhémar de Monteil family during the second half of the 12th century. This transfer of ownership connected the site to a prominent local noble house that would define its later development.

The castle displays Romanesque design with semicircular arches and carved columns that shape the interior spaces today. Visitors can observe how these architectural elements create a direct link between the medieval period and the building's physical form.

The castle opens Tuesday through Sunday with seasonal hours that vary throughout the year, so checking ahead is helpful. The climb to the walls and upper areas requires some physical effort, making comfortable footwear important for exploring the site.

From 2000 to 2017, the castle served as a contemporary art center, regularly hosting rotating exhibitions of modern work. This unusual function brought together contrasting worlds, showing how historical spaces can take on new creative roles.
