Abbaye de Moncé

Abbaye de Moncé is a former Cistercian monastery situated on a hilltop overlooking the Loire Valley with stone structures spanning multiple periods. The surviving buildings include an infirmary and fragments of the original stone church, which visitors can explore today.

The monastery was founded in 1209 by four nuns living in temporary wooden structures until stone buildings were erected in 1212. It gained abbey status in 1652, marking a significant elevation in its religious standing.

The monastery served as a spiritual community where women from noble backgrounds lived together in religious devotion. The presence of such a feminine religious center shaped the spiritual life of the surrounding region.

The site is accessible via walking trails and offers views of the Loire Valley from its elevated position. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear and watch their footing carefully, as some areas have uneven terrain.

The monastery's heraldry featured the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child in gold on a blue background, reflecting the community's deep Marian devotion. This religious emblem remained central to the site's identity across the centuries.
