Arthur, the 4D Adventure, 4D amusement ride at Futuroscope theme park, France
Arthur, the 4D Adventure is a motion simulator at Futuroscope, a theme park near Poitiers, France. The seats move in sync with a 3D animated film projected on a hemispherical OMNIMAX screen, making you feel physically part of the action unfolding around you.
The attraction opened in 2009, replacing an earlier ride called Atlantis Challenge that had stood on the same spot. Its construction was funded by the Vienne General Council with an investment of 6 million euros.
The ride draws from Luc Besson's Arthur and the Minimoys film series, in which tiny beings live in a world beneath the ground. Visitors experience the story from the perspective of one of these characters, flying through that miniature world on the back of a ladybug.
Riders must be at least 1.05 m (3 ft 5 in) tall, and children under 1.20 m (3 ft 11 in) must be accompanied by an adult. Since the seats move throughout the film, it is a good idea to secure loose items and wear comfortable clothing before boarding.
The attraction won the Themed Entertainment Association award for best attraction of 2011, just two years after opening. The award recognized in particular the combination of synchronized moving seats with hemispherical projection, which was still relatively new at the time.
