Chapelle Sainte-Anne-la-Palud, Religious chapel in Plonévez-Porzay, France.
Chapelle Sainte-Anne-la-Palud is a chapel in Plonévez-Porzay, set among sand dunes close to the Brittany coast of the Atlantic. It is built in granite with a bell tower and an enclosed forecourt typical of religious buildings in this part of France.
The current building was constructed between 1863 and 1864 and is the fourth religious structure to stand on this site, with the first dating back to medieval times. The location has therefore been a place of worship for many centuries before the present chapel was built.
The chapel draws pilgrims twice a year, with the main gathering held in late August attracting large crowds from across Brittany. During those days, the dunes around the building fill with processions, singing, and people wearing traditional Breton dress.
The chapel is set in a dune landscape and can be reached on foot via marked paths from Plonévez-Porzay, with a parking area available near the building. The sandy ground can be soft after rain or during autumn and winter, so walking shoes are a good idea.
Inside the chapel stands a granite statue of Saint Anne dated 1548, which was officially crowned in a ceremony in 1913, a rare honor for a statue in Brittany. This crowning gave the figure a special status that sets it apart from other religious images in the region.
