Château de Chitry-les-Mines

Château de Chitry-les-Mines is a castle built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Yonne River, with a main residence and two side wings extending to the south. The buildings are arranged to create internal courtyards while taking advantage of the elevated position above the river.

Construction of the castle began in 1307 under Isabeau de Bazoiches with a rectangular layout, round towers, and defensive features including a drawbridge. The structure underwent significant modifications and expansions throughout the following centuries under various owners.

The west wing houses the Sibyls Gallery, displaying fourteen paintings from the 17th century that visitors can still see today. This collection reflects the wealth and artistic interests of the castle's former inhabitants.

Visits are possible during warmer months and require reasonable physical fitness due to the elevated location and internal staircases throughout the building. Wear sturdy shoes and check access arrangements in advance, as opening times vary by season.

The castle displays a blend of architectural elements spanning from the 14th to the 19th century, with each period leaving visible marks on the structure. Close observation reveals these layers through different construction materials and stylistic details from successive building campaigns.
