Châteaux de Saint-Hilaire et des Plas

The Châteaux de Saint-Hilaire et des Plas consist of two medieval fortifications standing close together in Curemonte and surrounded by a shared enclosure. The central building features three round towers with battlements and flat tile roofs, while the second structure stands near the entrance.

The Saint-Hilaire family received the estate from the Curmontes and built the medieval fortress in the 13th century. The property later passed to the Aymard de Lostanges family and went through several ownership changes over the centuries.

The two castles share the same courtyard and display different architectural styles that reflect distinct periods and owners. Visitors can observe how the design of each building shows different approaches to defense and daily life.

The two buildings stand on a ridge in the center of Curemonte and offer views over the Sourdoire and Maumont valleys. Visitors should expect uneven ground as these structures are built on elevated terrain above the surrounding landscape.

In the 20th century the castle was acquired by Colette Renée de Jouvenel, daughter of renowned French author Colette. Known by her nickname Bel-Gazou, she connected a notable literary family to this village location.
