Château de la Johannie, Medieval castle in Curemonte, France.

Château de la Johannie is a medieval castle composed of two main wings joined by a central square tower. The tower contains a spiral staircase that connects the different levels of the building.

The castle was first built in 1083, making it one of the oldest buildings in the region. In 1308, the Order of Malta took over the property and established it as one of their commanderies.

The name comes from a medieval knight who held the land, and the building later served religious purposes under the Order of Malta. The fireplaces in the wings show how noble families decorated their spaces and valued skilled stonework.

Visiting is easiest during warmer months when paths are dry and exterior details are visible. The interior spaces can be cool and dimly lit, so wear appropriate clothing and allow extra time for navigating the narrow spiral staircase.

The windows grow progressively larger on each ascending floor, showing deliberate architectural design from the medieval period. A particularly carved window on the eastern facade stands out as distinctly different from the other openings in the building.
