Château de Sanzay

Château de Sanzay is a stone-built castle with a central keep, entrance gatehouse, defensive towers with artillery positions, and a chapel featuring a Gothic doorway, all surrounded by ancient moats. The various structures stand interconnected within these water-filled defensive boundaries.

Built in the 13th century atop a former Gallo-Roman settlement, the castle played an important defensive role during medieval conflicts in the region. Over time, it transitioned from military stronghold to residential and cultural center.

The site functions today as a meeting place for the community, with regular events and workshops showing visitors the link between its past and present-day use. The management works to ensure both locals and tourists experience this connection.

The site can be explored on foot with walkable paths connecting the different structures and allowing visitors to circumnavigate the old fortifications. Be aware that some areas may be closed depending on weather conditions or maintenance work.

The castle moat was designated as a Sensitive Natural Area in 2013, now hosting a marked trail that highlights local plant and animal species for observant visitors. This transformation shows how a medieval defensive feature has become an important ecological habitat.
