Château du Tournel, Medieval castle in Saint-Julien-du-Tournel, France

The Tournel Castle stands at an altitude of 1000 meters on a schist rocky spur, overlooking the Lot Valley in the Lozère department.

Built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, this fortress served as the seat of one of the eight baronies of Gévaudan until its partial dismantling.

Two notable members of the Tournel family, Iseult de Chapieu and Azalaïs d'Altier, were renowned 13th-century troubadours who composed poetry in Occitan.

The castle ruins are accessible through a small path starting at the tunnel level, with no entrance fee for visitors throughout the year.

The structure maintains its original medieval layout with minimal alterations, making it a reference for studying feudal architecture in the region.
